Chicago cop murder: 4 juveniles, 1 adult in custody after officer's shooting death, source says

Chicago police have apprehended five persons of interest – four juveniles and an adult male – in the shooting death of a 24-year-old officer who was killed steps from her mother’s doorstep Saturday morning after finishing a night patrol, according to law enforcement sources.

The four juveniles were taken into custody after a barricade situation at 76th and Bishop streets on Sunday night, about 5 miles from where Chicago Police Officer Areanah Preston was killed, a source told Fox News Digital Monday.

Charges were pending review by the state’s attorney’s office, which has 48 hours to file charges or release the suspects.

A spokesperson for Chicago police said they had no official updates and that the investigation was ongoing, but the department confirmed in a statement that its SWAT team had responded to an address on South Bishop Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Individuals were taken into custody after an armed standoff there in connection with Preston's murder, FOX 32 Chicago reported, citing another source.

It was not immediately clear whether they were the four juveniles who are suspects in connection with the murder. A fifth person, a 19-year-old male, was taken into custody somewhere else, a source told Fox News Digital.

A neighbor of Preston’s told Fox News Digital on Monday that Preston lived in the South Blackstone Avenue home with her mother. Despite a wave of violent crime afflicting the city, he said his neighborhood, full of elderly residents and working people, had been spared until Saturday.

"They took a life, a life that didn’t have to be taken," he said. "And whatever they were trying to get, it wasn’t worth it."

After the shooting, he said, he called a contractor to install a new security system and encircle his house with security cameras.

Preston’s murder came the day before thousands of city police officers marched in the St. Jude Parade in honor of their fallen colleagues.

Preston had served in the Chicago Police Department for three years in the Fifth District, authorities said.

Preston, after working a night shift, returned home around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, according to police. Around that time, police received an alert of shots fired on her block.

"Officers responded and found one of our own suffering gunshot wounds," the department's interim superintendent, Eric Carter, said during an emotional news briefing.

A responding officer rendered aid at the scene and rushed her to the University of Chicago Medical Center in the back of a squad car, he said. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital – the same one where fellow Chicago Police Officer Ella French was taken.

"Right now, we ask that you keep the officer and her family in your prayers, as well as the men and women of the Chicago Police Department, who sacrifice everything, including their lives, on the line for this city every day," Carter said.

According to the Fraternal Order of Police, Preston was shot while trying to defend herself from an armed robbery.

According to her Facebook profile, Preston had studied criminal justice and criminology at Illinois State University and went on to Loyola University in Chicago.

The school said in a statement that she was expected to receive her master's degree this weekend.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting "awful and tragic" and said she had instructed police to "spare no expense" in hunting down the suspects.

"There are some who say that our police officers are not worthy of our respect," she said. "There are some who say we should not be supporting and funding our police department. I would urge any person who holds that view to reflect on moments like this."

New Jersey police officer who was wounded in struggle with armed pedestrian dies from injuries

A police officer wounded during a struggle with an armed pedestrian earlier this year has died from his injuries, police said.

Deptford Township officer Robert Shisler, 27, died Sunday in the hospital where he had been treated since the March 10 incident, which also left the pedestrian dead, according to a statement from the Deptford police department. Shisler, a Deptford native, had served on the force for four years, and relatives have said his father and brother are also police officers.

Authorities have said Shisler tried to stop Mitchell Negron Jr., 24, of Deptford, as Negron walked on a roadway in Deptford, but Negron instead fled on foot. Shisler ran after him and both men were shot in an ensuing struggle. Negron was pronounced dead at the scene, while Shisler suffered a leg wound.

Authorities have released few details about the shooting, including how it occurred or why Shisler attempted to stop Negron. The shooting is under investigation by the state Attorney General’s office, which probes any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official capacity.

Luis Severino not pleased with Yankees' caution with latest injury: 'Trust me more'

Luis Severino is anxious to throw in a rehab start this week with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he was candid when he said he believed it should’ve happened last week.

The New York Yankees thought otherwise.

Severino has been dealing with a lat strain, and the Yankees placed him on the 60-day IL after he suffered it in the final week of spring training. Severino was openly critical of that decision by the Yankees because he thought only three or four starts needed to be missed to recover.

Instead, the number is more like nine or 10 starts that Severino will be missing, depending on how his rehab stint goes in the minors before the Yankees bring him back up.

Speaking with reporters Sunday before the Yankees’ series finale with the Tampa Bay Rays, Severino was blunt again when discussing how he threw a simulated game this past Friday instead of starting a rehab assignment.

YANKEES GM BRIAN CASHMAN MAKES PLEA WITH FANS AFTER SLOW START: ‘DON’T GIVE UP ON US'

"I think it was unnecessary not to throw in Low-A, but I do whatever they tell me to do," he said via the New York Post. "But I feel good."

Severino reportedly grinned when asked what the Yankees said to him to justify their reasoning, replying, "They tried to, but whatever."

"If I’m the only one who wants something and they don’t agree with that, they’re not going to let me do something," Severino explained. "But hopefully, for now on, they trust me more and try to let me compete more."

Severino’s last few years with the Yankees have been mired with injuries. He had back-to-back All-Star seasons in 2017 and 2018 in which he threw in 31 and 32 starts respectively. New York believed they had their next ace, but he had just three starts from 2019 to 2021 after suffering a shoulder injury, groin injury and needing Tommy John surgery.

Last season, Severino started 19 games, though, pitching to a 3.18 ERA over 102 innings.

The Yankees are just hoping Severino’s endurance can return in 2023, which could be the reasoning behind the caution in ramping him up.

But the right-hander is confident he’s ready to go and prove to his team that he can return to the rotation.

If all goes according to plan, Severino is expected back with the Yankees in late May.

NEW YORK RANGERS PART WAYS WITH COACH GERARD GALLANT FOLLOWING FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF EXIT

"I liked our start. I thought we did some things that we wanted to do, we asserted ourselves right off the bat and played the game at the pace that we wanted to play," Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said after the game. "Part of that was how we managed pucks, and part of it was the way the game played itself out."

McDavid added: "We played a lot faster, I thought we were more connected, I thought we were a little bit more aggressive, you know, all the things that we’ve been building toward."

Game 3 is set for Monday night.
